The Athens Farmers Market has opened for business on Wednesdays this season, with the first one beginning April 11, according to AFM spokesman Michelle Gorman.
The hours of the market are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both Wednesday and Saturday at its location in the parking lot of the Market on State Shopping Center on East State Street in Athens.
This June, the market will celebrate it’s 40th anniversary and special events are now being planned to celebrate, and will be announced at a later time. In conjunction with its anniversary, the market has unveiled its new website, www.athensfarmersmarket.org.
The first market – held on a summer day in 1972 – drew participation from three producers. The following week there were five. Later that summer, the market boasted a dozen vendors, mostly vegetable producers. And today the market boasts more then 100 vendors offering a wide range of products.
This year’s newly elected board members for the AFM are Larry Cowdery, president; Chris Bruno, vice president; Kip Parker, treasurer; and Chris Burke, secretary. At-large members are Debbie Bowers, Jeremy Bowman, Maureen Burns-Hooker, Ronda Clark and Gary Molina. Market staff includes Kip Parker, manager; Jan Spring and Claudia Bashaw, assistant managers; and Michelle Gorman, promotions.
